The project

The Melbourne Cricket Ground required a complete LED display system across three stands — the Olympic Stand, Shane Warne Stand and Ponsford Stand. The scope covered field perimeter LED at ground level and Field of Play parapet fascia LED across upper and lower parapet levels of each stand.

Aurora Signage was responsible for system design, cabinet manufacture and full project management from specification through commissioning. On-site installation was carried out by specialist contractors under Aurora Signage's project management.

The installation was completed in 2025 and represents the largest stadium LED installation in Australia by total display run.

The 474.24m field perimeter run is the longest continuous field perimeter LED of any Australian stadium.

What was installed

Six cabinet models across two series — all sharing identical pixel pitch, brightness and component specification. Width variants within each series allow the run to be composed to the structural geometry of each stand without field modification.

Engineering for the stadium environment

Brightness and ambient conditions

At 6,500 nits both cabinet series remain fully legible under direct afternoon sunlight and under the MCG's stadium floodlighting simultaneously. Brightness at this level is specified against the worst-case ambient condition the venue experiences — a summer afternoon day-night fixture — not average conditions.

Pixel pitch and viewing distance

P10 pitch is specified for field perimeter and parapet applications at the MCG's viewing distances — 40m to 180m from the nearest display face. At those distances P10 delivers clean resolution for in-stadium audiences and is compatible with broadcast camera capture without moiré artefacts.

Broadcast refresh rate

All cabinets are specified at or above 3,840 Hz refresh rate. This eliminates flicker artefacts in slow-motion replay and high-frame-rate broadcast capture — a mandatory requirement for any display in the broadcast camera sightlines at a venue of the MCG's broadcast profile.

Cabinet depth and structural clearance

The SPORT BANNER field perimeter cabinet is 101mm deep. The FOP parapet cabinet is 90mm deep. Both are engineered for installations where clearance between the display and the structural rail or barrier behind it is constrained. At these depths the cabinets can be fitted to existing stadium infrastructure without structural modification.

Width variants and stand geometry

Stadium stand geometry is not uniform. The SPORT BANNER series offers two width variants (800mm and 1,200mm). The FOP series offers four (640mm, 960mm, 1,280mm and 1,600mm). This range allows the continuous run to be composed to the structural bay dimensions of each stand without field-cutting cabinets or accepting visible gaps at joins.

Consistent active height across each series

All SPORT BANNER cabinets share an active display height of 849mm regardless of width. All FOP cabinets share a height of 960mm. Width variants tile horizontally as a single uniform display surface with no step or visual discontinuity at cabinet joins across the full run.

Built by Aurora

Every cabinet installed at the MCG was designed and manufactured by Aurora Display Technologies Limited, Aurora's Hong Kong-based manufacturing entity. All six cabinet models — both SPORT BANNER variants and all four FOP variants — were engineered specifically for this installation.

Direct manufacturing control means cabinet geometry, driver IC selection, diode bin specification and structural tolerances are set against the project requirement. The four FOP width variants and two SPORT BANNER width variants exist because the MCG's stand geometry required them — they were not selected from a standard catalogue.

Aurora Signage managed the full project from design sign-off through commissioning — coordinating manufacturing, logistics, on-site contractors and content system commissioning as a single accountable scope.

The same capability, right-sized for your venue

The engineering that went into the MCG installation — cabinet geometry matched to stand structure, brightness specified against ambient conditions, pixel pitch selected against viewing distance — applies directly to smaller stadium and sporting venue projects.

Aurora Signage works with local football clubs, regional stadiums, racecourses, aquatic centres and multi-sport facilities across Australia. Whether you are replacing an ageing scoreboard, adding a new outdoor screen, or specifying a creative LED display for a venue entrance or function space, the process is the same: specify the right product for your venue, not the easiest product to sell.

Aurora's project team will provide a no-obligation specification review — product selection, viewing geometry analysis, brightness and pitch recommendation, and indicative pricing.

Frequently asked questions

Who supplied the LED displays at the MCG?
Aurora Signage designed, manufactured and project-managed the LED display systems at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. On-site installation was carried out by specialist contractors under Aurora Signage's project management.
How much LED display was installed at the MCG?
The MCG installation comprises approximately 1,864m of LED display — 474.24m of field perimeter LED and approximately 1,390m of Field of Play parapet fascia LED across three stands: Olympic Stand, Shane Warne Stand and Ponsford Stand. 1,557 cabinets were installed across six cabinet models.
What pixel pitch and brightness are the MCG LED displays?
All cabinets installed at the MCG use P10 pixel pitch and are rated to 6,500 nits. Diodes are Nationstar SMD2727 with ICND2153 driver ICs. Refresh rate is at or above 3,840 Hz across all zones.
What is the difference between the field perimeter and Field of Play parapet cabinets at the MCG?
The field perimeter uses Aurora's SPORT BANNER cabinet series — two width variants (800mm and 1,200mm wide, 900mm tall) mounted on cross-rail spigots at field level. The Field of Play parapet uses Aurora's FOP cabinet series — four width variants (640mm, 960mm, 1,280mm and 1,600mm wide, all 960mm tall) mounted on parapet brackets facing the field of play. All six models share the same P10 pixel pitch, 6,500 nit brightness and component specification.
Can Aurora Signage supply LED displays for smaller stadiums and local football clubs?
Yes. Aurora Signage works with venues of all scales — from community oval scoreboards and local football clubs through to major stadiums. Contact Aurora Signage for a no-obligation venue specification review.
