MCG & Marvel Stadium — LED Ribbon Board System

Aurora designed, manufactured and project-managed the LED ribbon board systems across two of Australia's most broadcast-intensive venues — the MCG (100,024 seats) and Marvel Stadium (56,347 seats). Combined: 1,864 m of LED run, P10 pitch, 6,700 nits, 7,680 Hz refresh rate, and broadcast-safe louvre engineering to eliminate camera moiré.

Two venues, one engagement

The Melbourne Cricket Ground (100,024 seats) and Marvel Stadium (56,347 seats) are the two highest-profile broadcast venues in Australian rules football. Both required a complete replacement of their LED ribbon board infrastructure — field perimeter at ground level and Field of Play (FOP) parapet fascia facing the field — delivered to a single specification across both sites.

Aurora Signage was responsible for cabinet design, manufacture, and full project management from specification through commissioning at both venues.

The engineering brief

The brief compressed three compounding problems into one system:

Scale. The MCG run alone is 1,864 m across three stands — Olympic, Shane Warne and Ponsford. Marvel Stadium adds further perimeter and parapet runs across a closed-roof environment with different ambient light conditions. The cabinet geometry and mounting system had to be replicated exactly between venues so a single service workflow covered both.

Broadcast quality. Both venues carry live AFL broadcast coverage. Any LED display in the camera sightline must survive a 1/2,000 s shutter at 1,000 nits with zero banding, scan lines or flicker artefacts. At standard 3,840 Hz refresh this is marginal; the specification was elevated to 7,680 Hz to provide headroom against the worst-case broadcast camera configuration. A custom louvre geometry was engineered to eliminate moiré interference between the LED pixel array and the camera’s Bayer filter.

Electrical compliance. Each PSU (Megmeet MCP400WD-4.2/3.2-C, rated 301 W, 80 A inrush) draws measurable capacitive leakage current. At stadium scale — hundreds of PSUs on a shared electrical ring — aggregate leakage exceeds the 30 mA RCD trip threshold. Aurora’s electrical engineers designed the distribution system under AS/NZS 3000 clause 2.6.3.2.3.3(d), using D-Curve MCBs in place of RCDs and obtaining a formal written determination from Eleclarity confirming the exemption before works commenced.

Cabinet design — LDCSPORT series

The field perimeter and FOP parapet zones use two variants of the LDCSPORT P10 cabinet family. Both share a common specification:

ParameterValue
Pixel pitchP10
Brightness6,700 nits
LEDNationstar FM2727 SMD
Driver ICICND2153S
Scan rate1/3
Refresh rate7,680 Hz
PSUMegmeet MCP400WD-4.2/3.2-C (301 W)
IP ratingIP65 (face) / IP54 (rear)

Width variants within each series — two for the field perimeter, four for the FOP parapet — allow the continuous run to be composed to the structural bay dimensions of each stand without field-cutting cabinets or accepting visible gaps at joins.

Parapet mount — slide-rail access

The FOP parapet cabinets face the field of play at height; front-of-parapet harness access for servicing is operationally disruptive in a live-event stadium. Aurora engineered a custom slide-rail bracket system that allows each cabinet to be withdrawn rearward on the rail and fully accessed from behind the parapet edge — no front-of-parapet works, no elevated platform required for routine servicing.

The rail system was designed for a minimum 60 mm clearance between the display face and the parapet structural edge, maintaining the display geometry while providing the service envelope.

Broadcast engineering

Broadcast camera capture of stadium LED involves two risks: flicker from insufficient refresh rate, and moiré from pixel-to-sensor pitch interference.

Refresh rate. The 7,680 Hz specification was validated by high-speed camera testing at factory acceptance: DSLR at 1/2,000 s shutter, cabinet driven at 1,000 nits across TGI test images, zero scan lines or banding across every captured frame.

Louvre geometry. A custom louvre was developed with the physical geometry tuned to the dominant broadcast camera angles at both venues. The louvre interrupts the repeating pixel array structure as seen by the camera sensor, eliminating the constructive interference that produces moiré. The louvre was validated by broadcast trial before installation.

Factory acceptance testing

Every production batch was tested against a four-stage FAT protocol before dispatch:

  • Thermal burn-in: 100% white in a heated room, inspecting for tile/driver failures, shader deformation and frame warping.
  • IP water soak: High-pressure spray room simulating driving rain across all face and seam surfaces while the cabinet remains powered and operational. Pass standard: IEC 60529 IP65 (jets) + IP66 (powerful jets), zero ingress.
  • High-speed camera test: 1/2,000 s shutter, 1,000 nits, 7,680 Hz, TGI test pattern — zero banding permissible.
  • EMC anechoic chamber: Rotating turntable, CISPR 32 radiated emissions measured at 100%, 50% and 10% white. Broadcast-safe output required.

Certification

All cabinets are RCM-marked under Aurora’s supplier registration. The electrical installation was certified to AS/NZS 3000 by a licensed A-grade electrician, with the RCD exemption determination from Eleclarity on file as required by clause 2.6.3.2.3.3(d). Structural attachments were certified by a registered structural engineer for in-service wind loads at each stand.

The same capability for your venue

The engineering Aurora brought to the MCG and Marvel Stadium applies directly to smaller stadium and community venue projects — right-sized for the viewing distances, ambient conditions and operational constraints of your site. Whether you are specifying field perimeter LED, a new scoreboard, or a creative display for a venue entrance, the process is the same: match the product to the venue, not the margin.
