Southport Sharks — community stadium scoreboard and perimeter ribbon

The brief

Southport Sharks AFL Club had outgrown its original 2008-vintage scoreboard. The legacy system was a fixed-segment LED display — quarter, time, scores, no graphics — and it could not service the club’s growing schedule of QAFL, women’s, juniors and corporate hire matches.

The committee asked for three things:

1. A proper full-colour scoreboard that could carry sponsor video, live action replays, individual player stats and broadcast graphics.
2. Perimeter ribbon along the main grandstand frontage so sponsors had inventory to sell during home games.
3. Single-operator control — the volunteer-staffed scorebox could not run a separate scoreboard rig, ribbon controller and replay deck.

The site sits 12 km from the Coral Sea, so salt-air corrosion was a real factor on a 10-year asset life.

Engineering decisions

Scoreboard — GSR P5, not P3 or P6

We sized the main board at 8.0 m × 4.0 m (32 m²). At a typical viewing distance of 60–120 m from the spectator banks, the 50× pixel-pitch rule means anything finer than P5 is wasted resolution that the eye cannot resolve. P6 would have been visibly pixelated for the front rows; P3 would have doubled the budget for no perceptible gain.

Perimeter — P10, full colour, IP65

78 m of P10 ribbon at 1.0 m tall along the grandstand edge. The ribbon sits 1.5 m from spectators in the front rows; at that distance P10 still resolves clean text but is roughly half the per-m² cost of P6. The cabinets are fully IP65-rated front and back — critical because the back of the ribbon faces an open-walkway service area that gets hosed down with the field.

Salt-air protection

All exterior fasteners are 316 stainless. Cabinet rears are powder-coated over a hot-dip galvanised base. Power-supply pots are conformal-coated. The site has been inspected at 6, 12 and 18 months — no surface corrosion observed.

Australian compliance

Both the scoreboard and ribbon are RCM-marked under our supplier registration, with electrical certification by an A-grade Queensland electrician. The structural attachment was certified by a registered structural engineer for a 1-in-500-year wind event (wind loading is non-trivial — see our mounting guide).

Control — one operator, one touchscreen

This is where the install became unusual. Most community grounds run their scoreboard, ribbon and replay deck on three separate operator stations. Southport’s committee did not have the volunteer pool for that.

We deployed our own iSCORE scoreboard control platform running on a single 27” touchscreen in the scorebox. From that one surface the operator drives:

• Live AFL scoring with quarter-aware bonus rules baked in.
• Sponsor video playlists on the perimeter, time-coded to ball-in-play vs break.
• Replay clips pulled from the four field cameras with a 30-second rolling buffer.
• Manual “celebration” overrides for goals, marks of the day and behind-the-bench moments.

The whole control surface is cloud-managed: graphics templates, sponsor inventory and player rosters update from a web admin, no on-site IT visit required.

Outcome

• Sponsor revenue up 38% in the first season after install — the perimeter ribbon created saleable inventory the club had never had before.
• Operator handover time: 90 minutes. Volunteer scorers were fully trained in a single Saturday morning session.
• Six matches broadcast on community TV in the first season using the scoreboard’s clean SDI output as the broadcast graphics feed.
• Zero lost-time outages across 24 home games.
